((NOTE THAT ALL RULES ARE SUBJECT TO REVEIW AND REVISION.  NOTICE WILL BE POSTED OF ANY REVISIONS))

TOURNAMENT RULES FOR  :  LEFT 4 DEAD

FORMAT:
Single Elimination “Versus” mode bracket, seeded by “Survival” mode qualifier round.

TEAM FORMATION:
Each team will consist of one (1) captain and three (3) members.

NUMBER OF TEAMS:
Any number of teams may register for the event and attempt to qualify for the single elimination bracket.  Only eight ( 8 ) teams will be seeded into the final bracket, based on qualifier round times.

EVENT TIMES:
“Survival” mode qualifier begins 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Friday night Team Fortress 2 tournament.  Players will have until 5PM Saturday to complete their qualifying attempts.

"Versus” mode Single Elimination bracket begins at 6PM Saturday, runs until completed.

RULES FOR QUALIFIER ROUND:

SETTINGS:
Qualifying runs will take place with default map settings.

MAP:

All qualifier attempts will be played on the Lighthouse survival map.

QUALIFYING CRITERIA:

Teams will be judged solely on their overall survival time.  Top 8 times will be seeded into the tournament.

TIE BREAKER:
In the event of a tie for 8th place, the tied teams will compete against each other for the right to advance.  Previous times will be disregarded.  Each team will get only one attempt.

PRACTICE RUNS:
Teams may make any number of practice runs on the practice servers that we provide.  These runs are not counted as qualifying runs, regardless of times posted.

OFFICIAL RUNS:
When a team is ready to make an official run, it’s captain must consult with the Tournament Organizer or other designated staff member.  The staff member will reset the official server and assign a password to that team captain.  Once the captain has gotten his team into the server and all players are ready, the server will be reset and the official run will begin.  PLEASE NOTE:  Once the server has been reset and the run started you MUST complete the run, regardless of circumstances.  We will not consider any user-based hardware or software errors as a reason to restart your run (intentional glitching will of couse be punished).  Please ensure that your computer is running well and is fully capable of running L4D in a stable manner before attempting a run.  We are not responsible for your blue screens!

NUMBER OF OFFFICIAL RUNS:

Each team may attempt a total of two (2) official runs.  The longer survival time of the two runs will be used for determining qualification times.  Once a team has used both of its’ runs, it may not attempt another.

RULES FOR VERSUS BRACKET:

PLACEMENT INTO BRACKET:
The top eight ( 8 ) teams from the qualifier round will be seeded into an 8-slot single elimination bracket.  Teams not within the top eight will not be placed and are automatically eliminated from contention.

MAPS:
In each round, the higher seeded team will be given the right to choose which campaign to play.  The teams will play the full campaign chosen by the higher seed team.

FINALS:
The final round will be played as a best 2-out-of-3 match.  The high seed team will be given the choice of the first campaign.  The losing team of the first campain will be given the choice of the second campaign.  If necessary, the losing team of the second campaign will be given the choice of the third campaign.

OVERALL RULES / FAQ:

CHEATING/MACRO POLICY:

Any players found to be using exploits or cheats of any type may be subject to discipline, including but not limited to their team’s elimination from the tournament.  Map based exploits are included in this.

OVERALL SPORTSMANSHIP:

Players are expected to maintain an appropriate level of civility during the event.  Incidents of excessive poor sportsmanship will be address on a case by case basis.

SOFTWARE/HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY:
All players are expected to have the game patched and ready to go when the event begins.  Please ensure that your computer is in prime operating condition before attending MassiveLAN Party 2009.  Please make sure that your installation of Left 4 Dead is patched and ready as well.  We are not responsible for getting your copy of L4D working.  We will work to assist any member who has problems with installing/playing the game to the best of our abilities, but cannot promise to provide any troubleshooting or technical support!

I like how this is set up.  The only thing I would watch for are the obvious lighthouse cheaters.  I know valve took care of the rock cheat, but I'm not sure if there are any others.  You may just want to check every team out when they are doing their qualifying round.

first off....what?

second....wait what?

third...i would think it would be safe to say that every one here, well that is everyone attending the event, will be playing games that they have legitimately purchased.

fourth....are you interested in playing on the team or no?

Yeah wht the hell. I probably won't be in until later in the day Friday. I won't ask off from work since a few other guys already put in and I am not going to start some sort of days off competition.

I only asked about Steam because I ran into an event a few years ago where I bought and loaded up a game only to find out the tourny was using some chopped and diced copy so I couldn't play.

I'm not the best at this but I liek it.

This was just announced http://wanfest.newegg.com/

You should check out the L4D tourney Iz.  Not to give you more things to think about but Newegg is just doing the No Mercy level and they had to include all these illegals:
Quote
Violations:

The following is a list of illegal spots during match play:

    * The vents behind the elevator on the 28th floor of No Mercy 4 are illegal.
    * Camping vents while a tank is active is illegal.
    * On No Mercy 3, if a tank is active, going in the bathroom in the restauraunt and camping on top of the stalls is illegal.

The following is not allowed during live match play:

    * Skipping any crescendo event without triggering it is illegal.
    * Blocking the path of the survivors with a car or a tree or any other moveable object which prevents them from advancing is illegal.
    * Any method of circumventing the infected spawn timer is illegal.
    * Being in a position that is not reachable by regular zombies as a survivor is illegal.
    * Camping anywhere the infected cannot attack you is illegal.
    * Bunny hopping with the hunter to increase damage pounces is illegal

I know it's too late and too much work to go through each level and list off the illegal spots, so we're good how we are.  Hopefully there won't be any asshat teams that use exploits like these.

Win because you are the better gamer, not because you knew of the secret toilet area in which the tank can't get you.  Hell most of the time I won't even do the corner/closet thing because it just ain't fun.

I have played on just about every online tournament since the game has been released and not only have the rules that [GPA]Kritheon has posted above become uniform but also a few other things.

Tank spawns every round. (because some maps are just too easy with out a tank.)

And most recently Healthpack spawns have been converted to pills.
You still start with your original 4 health packs but instead of a ton of health packs spawning throughout the map they are all pills.
This just makes it more intense, and every well placed infected attack is actually worth something when the survivors can not just walk into the next room and find 4 health packs.
